Obichi is a doctor from Imo State, Nigeria, who is working towards addressing the health and safety issues surrounding the lack of access to toilets in Nigeria. Nigeria leads the world with the highest number of people that defecate in public; 1 out of 4 people defecate in public, and less than half of Nigerian households have their own toilets. Open defecation brings significant health risks, including diarrhea, cholera and typhoid, as well as safety issues for women whom are most vulnerable to sexual assault when going to relive themselves alone.
Obichi is the inventor of Alterfold: the first environmentally friendly, economically and socially sustainable toilet in Nigeria. The toilet is made out of 100% recycled plastic sourced from waste dumps in Lagos, and it generates bio-waste, which is sold and used as an income to support female farmers. The system is also designed to use 50% less water than traditional toilets, supporting communities with limited access to water.
