The 12 Year Old Who Proves Anyone can Make a Difference

Many people think they're too young to make a difference. Here to prove those folks wrong is Emma Grover, a 12 year old from Montreal who donated her Bat Mitzvah to Sundara. After a recent visit to her school, Solomon Schechter, by Sundara's founder, Emma was moved to make 150 bars of soap for Sundara by hand. These bars of soap, which were featured as the centerpieces on tables at the event, are now being sent to Sundara's workshop in Mumbai to be used in hygiene trainings across the slums.

We spoke to Emma recently to hear more about her desire to give back and find out why the work that Sundara does is so important to her.

Why is Sundara's work and health and hygiene important to you?

As a young woman I find that it is very important to empower women all over the world to have opportunities to support and provide for themselves and their families.

Why did you chose this occasion to give back and spread awareness?

Everyone was being so generous with me at my Bat Mitzvah. I felt that I wanted to be generous to someone too. I am lucky to have this day but I like to share my joy with others: that's why it was important for me to give back to the community in some way.

What are your hobbies/favorite things to do?

I love hanging out with my friends. I also love sports. I play ringette (a Canadian team), and enjoy basketball and swimming.

What other issues are you passionate about?

My brother was born prematurely, so my whole family started our own bike race in Montreal. We do it every year to raise money for the Jewish general hospital to show our gratitude and give back to other families who might be in that position.

What is your dream? For the world and also for yourself?

I would like for all women around the world to have equal rights as men. I hope to contribute to this dream by becoming a human rights lawyer.

Thanks Emma! We think you will make a great lawyer someday. :)
